In the past, a student might have had their smartphone taken away from them if it was out during class. This year, however, teachers will actually welcome those devices in the classroom.

Tallmadge High School is embarking on a pilot study this year — dubbed the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Program — to evaluate the effectiveness of supplementing traditional classroom teaching with the use of kids’ own portable electronic devices.

The program is made possible, in part, by some upgrades to the high school’s Internet network over the summer.
